Ernest & Celestine   (10:00 am)

France  |  2012  |  80 minutes  |  Stephane Aubier, Vincent Patar, Benjamin Renner

Celestine is a young orphan mouse growing up in an extensive mouse civilization called the “World Below.” Ernest is a vagabond bear in the bear-populated “World Above.” Despite the fact that mice and bears are supposed to live in mutual fear and distrust, the two bond over a shared love of music and painting and artistry. But when past hijinks catch up to them, will their unexpected friendship survive the disapproval of their respective societies?

Ernest & Celestine’s beautifully minimal animation style and heartwarming story of finding friendship earned it an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film in 2014.

Song of the Sea    (1:30 pm)

Ireland  |  2014  |  93 minutes  |  Tomm Moore

Ben’s mother disappeared from their lighthouse home the night his younger sister Saoirse was born, and his life has not been the same since. He and Saoirse are sent to live in the city with their grandmother, a move that is intended to help them cope with their loss. But when the city’s ill effects on Saoirse reveal that she is a magical fairy creature from Irish folklore, the siblings set out to return to the sea before it is too late...for Saoirse and for the entire fairy world.

Song of the Sea was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film in 2015.

Look for parallels between the real-world characters and the fairy-world characters in this lushly animated, deeply poignant story of loss and acceptance.
