Eleven-year-old Akeelah Anderson doesn't put much effort into school, but when her teachers encourage her to participate in a spelling bee, she wins it handily, catching the attention of Dr. Joshua Larabee, an English professor and former national spelling bee competitor. After her win at school, Akeelah decides to compete for a spot at the national spelling bee herself, and despite a rocky start to their relationship, Larabee agrees to be her coach. There are a lot of obstacles in Akeelah's path. Her father is dead. Her mother is overwhelmed by her job and Akeelah's headstrong, trouble-making brother. Her competitors have many more resources than she does. Can Akeelah overcome these obstacles and draw on the resources of her own community as she spells her way to the national competition?
